Mazda offers a solid set of SUV options. The all-new CX-30 is the latest addition to the family and fills the space between the subcompact CX-3 and the compact CX-5. As a large subcompact crossover, the CX-30 competes well against models like the Hyundai Kona and the Subaru Crosstrek, but what’s the difference between this crossover and the well-established Mazda CX-5? Below we will highlight the main differences between the two most appealing SUVs in the Mazda roster.

While both models were built under the “Kodo” design language and feature an upper-class style, the CX-30 is based on the Mazda3 chassis and has lower ground clearance, while the CX-5 is a more upright, traditionally-shaped SUV.
Both models come standard with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, and are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The CX-5, however, is also available with an optional turbocharged engine that makes an impressive 250 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive comes standard in both models and all-wheel drive is available. No matter which model you choose, though, you will get a sharp and sporty vehicle that is engaging to drive.
When it comes to interior design, the CX-30 is a little more modern than the CX-5, including the latest generation of the brand’s infotainment system. Still, both models feature an upscale and refined interior that could be considered entry-level luxury. The biggest difference between these two SUVs comes in terms of space. Second-row legroom in the CX-5 comes in at around 40 inches, while the CX-30 offers 36 inches. The CX-5 is also bigger in terms of cargo area, offering 10 cubic feet more of room behind the rear seats.
If you value performance and cargo space, then the CX-5 is the way to go, as it offers more room and has an optional supercharged engine. In case you prioritize a smaller and fuel-efficient crossover that can still satisfy your driving needs, then take a sincere look at the CX-30. Altogether, with either of these vehicles, you will get a premium feel difficult to find on most mainstream competitors.
